Strictly star, 73, reveals there’s ‘no cure’ after suffering bleed behind eye

Former Strictly Come Dancing star Russell Grant has revealed he has suffered a bleed behind his eye, for which there is no cure. The 73-year-old astrologer appeared on Strictly in 2011 with pro partner Flavia Cacace, and has since been keeping his loyal fans updated on social media with his health struggles. In 2022, Russell underwent surgery for a brain tumour and had a growth on his pituitary gland removed.

He later revealed his diabetes may have returned, and has now shared a concerning update on his sight. Taking to X, Russell wrote: ‘Monday: I woke with strange cottony things floating in my left eye. Headed to the opticians for tests. Next day @BlackpoolHosp called: day after into the eye clinic. ‘Result: I had a bleed behind my eye but no retinal damage but it seems I have to befriend the floater! No cure.’.

He shared his thanks to the healthcare professionals who had aided him in the comments, adding: ‘It was an New Moon so I knew all would be well. Thank you everyone.’. As fans sent their messages of support for him in the comments, he went on to share further details about the appointments and his eye health. Russell wrote in one comment: ‘No, it’s not a cataract it’s like a floating cobweb and [his doctor] Mr Malik told me it’s a bleed behind the eye. It’s called old age Kina, this Middlesex man is 74 next Wednesday and it’s all part of it x.’.

He added that he was ‘in safe hands’, and joked that his ‘floater’ is in the shape of ‘Delaware’. ‘Life is sent to try us,’ he replied to one comment, saying in another: ‘Just a nuisance, if not a little depressing but there we go.’. In 2023, Russell opened up about his brain tumour diagnosis, saying he was ‘ in denial before the gruelling six-hour operation in November 2022 which his family and friends encouraged him to undertake.

At the time, he said that he’d been told the tumour, which was pressing on his optic nerve, could make him lose his sight. ‘But I was in denial,’ he told The Mirror. ‘I was so scared.’. He went on: ‘Then one day I had a Zoom call with my neurosurgeon Professor Omar ­Pathmanaban. He was lovely, so ­reassuring. But what topped it off was he then said, “It would be an honour and a privilege to take away your tumour… when I was a kid my mother and I used to watch you every morning on breakfast telly. It made me late for school.”‘.

‘What I wanted to do was run away into the mountains like Heidi,’ he added. He had been warned not to sneeze, blow his nose or travel for the next six months to avoid post-surgery complications.
