Today's Super Bowl is expected to attract its largest TV audience ever, thanks to the ‘Swifty effect’. The biggest event in US sport sees the Kansas City Chiefs going after their third Super Bowl in a row against the Philadelphia Eagles. Taylor Swift’s boyfriend Travis Kelce plays for the Chiefs and her appearance at the match last year led to a record 123.7 million TV viewers – with a 24 per cent increase in 18- to 24-year-old women.

A source for the NFL, American Football’s governing body, said: ‘The Swifty effect has been remarkable. 'Every time Kansas City play they are getting record crowd numbers and attracting young female fans who have never shown an interest before. ‘We expect viewing figures for this year’s game to be the largest yet and that is entirely down to the Swifty effect’. On Friday, Ms Swift and Mr Kelce were spotted having dinner in New Orleans where today’s event takes place.

Many expect Kelce to propose to the singer. Viewers at home will be treated to the most expensive Super Bowl ads ever with most 30-second slots costing between $10 million - $20 million. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal were paid $2.5 million each to recreated their famous New York deli ‘fake orgasm’ scene for a Hellman’s mayonnaise commercial. David Beckham and Matt Damon were each paid $2 million to star in an ad for Stella Artois beer and chef Gordon Ramsey earned $1 million to plug cookware brand HexClad.
