China is building what is expected to be the world’s largest airport on a man-made island. The Dalian Jinzhouwan International Airport will span a 20-square-kilometre island and feature four runways, along with a 969,000sqft passenger terminal. Poised to be one of the country’s major travel hubs, it’s currently being built on reclaimed land in Jinzhou Bay, located to the north of Dalian city in Liaoning Province, northeastern China.

Once finished, it will take the title of the world’s largest airport built on an artificial island, beating both Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Japan’s Kansai Airport (KIX) in size. For comparison, HKG measures at 12.48 square kilometres and KIX spans just 10.5 square kilometres.

Meanwhile, Heathrow Airport, London’s largest, covers 12.3 square kilometres. The massive airport will have an annual passenger footfall of 80 million across 540,000 flights. It will open in phases, with the first phase scheduled for 2035. ‘The country’s largest offshore airport is rising slowly from the sea level like the sunrise in the east,’ the airport said in a statement on the Chinese social media platform WeChat.

Dalian City is known for its coastal location, beaches and architecture. Its proximity to tourist destinations is another key draw. Japan and South Korea are just a couple of hours away by flight, making it a great base for those wanting to explore. Dalian Zhoushuizi Airport, the city’s international airport that has been operating for nearly a century, has already reached its maximum capacity of 70 million.
