The internet is buzzing with excitement over the discovery of an onion island in Japan – a place so perfect for Shrek it's uncanny. Awaji Island has gained fame for its mouth-watering sweet onions, known for their tender bite due to the island's warm climate and rich volcanic earth. If you're looking to enjoy the wonder of the Awaji onion, you can book a trick to the majestic island and experience the famous flavour.

Engross yourself in all things onion at the Utsunooka Onaruto Bridge Memorial Museum, a quirky attraction devoted entirely to the beloved bulb. The museum boasts a range of onion-themed paraphernalia including pianos, an array of snacks, and even furniture. A tantalising clip giving people a behind-the-scenes look at the museum has recently taken social media by storm.

Naomi, a local content creator, voiced her enthusiasm: "Onion island in Japan. Awaji Island is famous for its sweet onion, thanks to the island's sunny climate and fertile volcanic soil.". She continued: "One must-visit spot is the Utsunooka Onaruto Bridge Memorial Museum, where everything is onion-themed from the giant onion statue overlooking the sea to the onion wigs you can wear for fun photos. Stop by the souvenir shop to grab onion-flavoured snacks, keychains, tote bags and much more.".

To get to this unusual museum, you'll need to travel a couple of hours by car from Kobe station or catch the bus from Kosoku Maiko station in Kobe and enjoy a similar duration. Naomi advises: "I recommend going by car, since you'll have to walk about 1.4 km uphill from the nearest station called Awajishima Minami Interchange.".
