Jason Kelce is sceptical of his younger brother Travis' sentiment that his jersey number, 87, is a heartfelt homage to him. The Kelce brothers have soared to NFL stardom in recent years: Jason with his celebrated Super Bowl victory in 2018 and Travis winning three Lombardi trophies beginning in 2020. Their rise to fame was not just for their exploits on the field but also because of Travis' high-profile relationship with Taylor Swift.
During an NFL Films interview in December 2023 which spotlighted the pair, Travis claimed his jersey number was picked in tribute to Jason being born in 1987. The 35-year-old said: "If there is a Kelce legacy, two brothers making it to the NFL, it all started in 1987 because this big guy [Jason] was born in 1987.
"I'm forever in debt to this guy for putting his name, our name, putting his honour on the line to get me another chance. When I say I owe it all to him, I do. I love you. You're the only reason why I wear the number 87 anyway. "I never told you that, man. You started the legacy.".
Jason has cast doubt over this narrative however, indicating to his wife Kylie that he finds Travis' story unconvincing. On her podcast 'Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce', the 32-year-old disclosed Jason's suspicion, suggesting Travis might not be entirely honest about his reasons for wearing the number 87.
