Unforgotten writer Chris Lang has taken to social media to respond to fans who have criticised the show after season six aired, leaving viewers divided over its content. The new installments have seen Sinéad Keenan and Sanjeev Bhaskar reprise their roles as DCI Jess James and DI Sunil Khan. Last week, the series kicked off with a chilling case as the two detectives got to work at finding out what had happened to a dismembered body found on Whitney Marsh.
While fans have generally been positive about the first episodes, there have been some niggling complaints over the political theme as the crime-solving duo uncover many hidden secrets. Viewers have complained that the "political commentary" felt too much on occasions in series six. One person stated on X: "I was a fan of each previous series. 2 episodes in and I'm finding the political commentary way too much, I think it detracts from the story and makes the whole thing less credible.".
The show's creator Chris, stepped in, taking time to respond to the fan who had been feeling downhearted over this season. He responded: "Sorry to hear that, I like to hold up a mirror to the UK, and reflect where we are.". Another online user went on to further describe the show as "woke" but one fan lunged in with a defensive reply. They said: "I binge-watched it on @ITVX last night. I think @ChrisLangWriter is brilliant in playing our emotions & @TVSanjeev speaks volumes with just his eyes. It made me angry. It made me sad. It provoked thought. Did I agree with all the themes? No.".
Taking to his keyboard once more, Chris followed up with: "This is exactly the sort of response we would hope for. I certainly didn't write it thinking an audience would like all the various positions taken in the story, how could they, we are a country divided, but is it a story that provokes thought and respectful discussion? I hope so.". So far this series, Sunny and Jess have discovered human remains on Whitney Marsh, with the dynamic duo soon linking the body parts to an on-going missing person case.
The investigation ramps up and fans are treated to an array of guest characters who join Jess and Sunny along the way, including Melinda Ricci (MyAnna Buring), Martin 'Marty' Baines (Maximilian Fairley), Dot Baines (Michele Dotrice), Asif Syed (Elham Ehsas) and Juliet Cooper (Victoria Hamilton). The synopsis reads: "While these characters live seemingly separate lives, they are intricately connected by their pasts. It's up to Jess, Sunny, and their dedicated team to uncover these hidden links and ultimately expose the truth behind the cold case murder.".
