Gardeners’ World have shared must-know advice for looking after house plants this January. It’s no secret that house plants can be tricky to keep healthy - while some house plants thrive in cool, dark rooms, others require plenty of natural light and lots of water. So understanding what it takes to keep each individual house plant thriving can feel challenging, especially if you have lots of house plants dotted around your home.
Understanding how to change the care you provide your plants with as the seasons change can also be rather tricky. Luckily, gardening experts from Gardeners’ World have shared some advice for ensuring that house plants remain healthy throughout the winter months.
The experts explained that it’s vital to keep house plants moist if you’ve got your central heating on, because the warmer, dryer temperatures of your home can be detrimental to house plant growth. They explained: “Give house plants extra humidity to combat the drying effects of central heating”.
They also recommend moving houseplants that need plenty of sunlight onto a ‘sunny windowsill’ during the colder winter months. This allows them to get as much light as possible, despite the darker, shorter days. The gardening experts add that in winter, some house plants will need watering less frequently and should be placed on ‘cold windowsills at night’ so as not to get too warm if the central heating is on. If you leave house plants too close to a radiator they can end up quickly drying out.
