Kay Burley made Peter Andre cry in a toe-curling interview live on Sky News in 2010. The controversial broadcaster, 64, who has announced she is retiring from the corporation after 36 years, was speaking to the Aussie singer, 51, about his relationship with Katie Price. When showed a clip of Katie's ex, Dwight Yorke, criticising Peter, who had said he wanted to adopted the former footballer's son Harvey, the singer was asked by Kay how he would feel if Katie's then husband, Alex Reid, wanted to adopt Princess and Junior.
Fighting back tears, Peter said: "No-one is going to take my kids away from me" before pulling out his ear piece and walking out of the studio. Kay was slammed for the interview after Ofcom received numerous complaints. Responding in her official blog afterwards on the Sky News website, she said: "What a day. Peter Andre broke down on my show and when I went to check during an ad break that he was OK, he sobbed on my shoulder in the Green Room. He’d discovered not 12 hours earlier that the mother of two of his children had married without even bothering to tell him and was devastated at the very thought that she might want take the youngsters away from him.".
However, Peter then broke his silence, criticising Kay for her interview, saying "I can't believe anyone would intentionally try to hurt me like that". The star said it was "unfair" that the journalist had bombarded him with questions about Alex adopting his children with ex, and said watching the interview "still hit a raw nerve". Upwards of 880 complaints were made over the way Kay questioned Peter about his children with Katie. But Ofcom ruled the broadcaster's approach was not "bullying" or "intimidating". Ofcom said the majority of complainants were concerned by the intrusive manner in which the singer was interviewed.
Sky News informed Ofcom that Kay consulted Peter prior to the interview and told him that he would be asked questions about Katie's wedding to Alex and related issues. "It was understandable that the presenter focused on the human interest angle of the wedding by asking Andre for his reaction, and how it would impact on his children," Ofcom stated. The watchdog acknowledged Kay's interview style was "probing and persistent" but said "she remained overall measured in tone throughout and did not put inappropriate pressure on Peter for a response.".
