Haaland made the trip to Spain for the midweek Champions League clash with Real Madrid but was not called upon by Pep Guardiola, remaining on the bench as City crashed out of Europe. Follow Metro’s blog for live updates from Manchester City vs Liverpool.
And the striker has not been deemed fit enough for today’s showdown back in Manchester, failing to make bench this afternoon with Omar Marmoush leading the City attack. City were hopeful Haaland would be available to face Liverpool but Guardiola revealed on Friday that the striker, who has scored 27 goals in all competitions this season, was set to undergo late tests closer to the game.
Speaking ahead of kick-off, Guardiola said his striker ‘didn’t feel good’ after coming through a final training session on Friday. ‘Yesterday after training he didn’t feel good,’ Guardiola told Sky Sports. ‘During these nine years we played many seasons without really important players and we survived.
‘This season, we have had a lot of injuries and we could not survive, but in specific games we have to do it.’. Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias are named among the City subs with Kevin de Bruyne returning to the starting XI. Abdukodir Khusanov continues at centre-half with John Stones ruled out with Rico Lewis slotting in at right-back.
