Donald Trump has declared February 9 ‘Gulf of America Day’ after signing an executive order to change names of landmarks around the US. Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness is an order that will see US administrations change the name of the Gulf of Mexico and also the mountain Denali to Mount McKinley. The president shared the news while on Air Force One over the gulf, as he flew in to watch the Super Bowl in New Orleans on Sunday.

He pledged that the name would be changed across all official US correspondence and also on Google, although Google Maps was still listing “Gulf of Mexico” as of Monday lunchtime. “I’ve never spoken to Mexico about it, it was our call and I am a little surprised at that,” he said while on board the plane. It was a busy day for Mr Trump who, apart from trolling Taylor Swift, also announced a range of tariffs.

Mr Trump released a statement on Sunday calling for Americans to honour Gulf of America Day. “I call upon public officials and all the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.”. However, Americans hoping for a day off will be disappointed, as Gulf of America Day has not been classified as a federal holiday. It means that, while the day is on official calendars, little will actually change in the lives of everyday people.
