Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson said in a statement: “Excessive airport charges and lack of workable growth incentives continue to undermine Spain's regional airports, limiting their growth and leaving vast swathes of airport's capacity underutilised.”.
“The stifling of connectivity and tourism in Rome is in stark contrast to other major European capitals, such as Brussels, London and Paris, where airports operate without restrictive limits on flights,” the airline said.
In a major setback for holidaymakers, Ryanair is set to discontinue flights across destinations in Italy, France, Spain, Austria and Denmark.
Following the implementation of a new aviation tax in Denmark earlier this month, Ryanair declared it would close its Billund base and cease operations in Aalborg.
Ryanair will no longer operate an aircraft from Fiumicino, the biggest airport in the nation, that is situated in Rome from summer 2025.
