Amazing tech behind £15.8trillion tunnel that could see one hour travel from London to New York The technology behind the $20trillion (£15.8 trillion) tunnel that could allow you to travel from London to New York in one hour is much older than you might think.

By creating a vacuum within the hypothetical mega tunnel between London and New York, hyperloop technology would allow pressurised vehicles to travel without facing any air resistance.

British inventor George Medhurst would file a patent in 1799 for a system that could move goods through a system of iron pipes using air pressure.

He published a white paper on the hyperloop the following year, and has been a huge proponent of the tech ever since, organising student competitions and founding The Boring Company, focused on tunnelling technology.

This would theoretically mean they could reach speeds of more than 3,000mph, meaning the journey would be barely an hour long.
