Amazon Prime Video adds ‘perversely entertaining’ Nicolas Cage film with his best comic performance

Amazon Prime Video has quietly added a ‘truly original’ Nicolas Cage film that fans say had them ‘riveted’ throughout – largely down to his widely praised comedic turn in the lead role. Dream Scenario was added to the streaming platform just this week but has been causing waves since its release in 2023. Its 61-year-old star even picked up the best actor in a film prize at the Saturn Awards on Sunday for his performance, and the movie holds a pretty stellar 91% critic rating on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.

The A24 movie is also considered a solid part of his recent career ‘renaissance’ filmography alongside the likes of Pig, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, The Surfer and headline-grabbing horror Longlegs. In Dream Scenario, Cage appears transformed to play Paul Matthews, a regular family man and biology professor who finds his life turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams.

However, his newfound stardom soon starts to take a nightmarish turn, with Paul struggling to handle the attention. Fans couldn’t agree more with the assessments as Kevin P wrote: ‘A bizarre surreal dark comedy with an insane premise and one hell of an awkward yet consistently engaging performance from Nicholas Cage.’. ‘This movie might be one of my all-time favourites after watching it,’ Luke J shared in his audience review, while Frank C said that Cage’s ‘incredible’ performance in the unsettling film had him ‘riveted the whole time’.

The film, written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli, also co-stars Julianne Nicholson, Michael Cera and Tim Meadows.
