The weekend is upon us and many of you will be looking forward to relaxing on the sofa and catching up on your watchlist. But if you’re tired of keeping up with episode upon episode of TV series and want to settle down for an evening of explosions and no-holds-barred action, we have you covered. From nail-biting thrillers to bloody action hits and explosive superhero tales, we’ve rounded up the best blockbuster films to watch right now on Prime Video.

Set 30 years after the 1982 original directed by Ridley Scott, Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic Blade Runner 2049 came to the big screen in 2017.

It follows K (Ryan Gosling), an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department, who goes in search of a former blade runner who has been missing for over three decades after uncovering a secret that could lead to an all-out war. In Alex Garland’s acclaimed 2024 film Civil War, a Second Civil War has broken out in the United States, leading to conflict across the country as the Western Forces look to take on the loyalist US states and take out the President (Nick Offerman), the individual seemingly behind the divided nation and whose actions led to the outbreak of violent warfare.

We see this version of a United States at war with itself from the perspective of a team of journalists; photographer Lee (Kirsten Dunst), reporter Joel (Wagner Moura), their mentor Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson) and young aspiring photographer Jessie (Cailee Spaney). The entire Matrix quadrilogy is available to watch right now on Prime Video – starting with the innovative 1999 sci-fi thriller that started it all.

After questioning his reality, Neo’s (Keanu Reeves) suspicions are confirmed when rebel leader Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) tells him that he has led his life inside a simulation created by intelligent machines. Sir Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer made waves in 2023 – and not least due to the Barbenheimer phenomenon that swept the internet. The epic biopic movie, based on a biography called American Prometheus by Martin J. Sherwin and Kai Bird, tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) – one of the key scientists involved in developing the atomic bomb.

If you enjoyed Gladiator 2 last year starring Pedro Pascal and Paul Mescal, revisit the 2000 original courtesy of Prime. Starring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, and Richard Harris, the film takes place in ancient Rome where Commodus (Phoenix) takes over power and demotes Maximus (Crowe), who is relegated to fighting to death as a gladiator. Starring Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson, and Alex Pettyfer, Guy Richie’s latest film is available to stream now on Prime Video.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is based on recently declassified files from the British War Department during World War Two, revealing the first-ever special forces organisation formed under the order of Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Bond hopeful Aaron Taylor Johnson wowed audiences in 2010 with the release of violent superhero flick Kick-Ass. Directed by Matthew Vaughn, the film follows teenager Dave Lizewski (Johnson) who creates his own superhero alter-ego to fight crime, joining forces with vigilante team joins forces with the father/daughter vigilante team of Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) as they fight to take a dangerous mobster down.

Quentin Tarantino released Django Unchained in 2012 to critical acclaim, with the film becoming the director’s highest-grossing movie to date. Set two years before the Civil War, slave Django (Jamie Foxx) teams up with German bounty hunter Dr King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) on a mission to capture the Brittle brothers, a journey which takes them to the infamous plantation of Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).

Released in 2017, Kong: Skull Island rebooted the King Kong franchise and was the second in the Monsterverse, featuring Godzilla and other big screen creatures. Set in 1973, the eleventh King Kong film follows a team of scientists and Vietnam War soldiers travelling to the uncharted Skull Island and meeting Kong, a gigantic ape who is the last of his species. Twisters can be rented on Prime Video, but you can watch its predecessor totally free on the streaming platform.

The 1996 film Twister follows scientist Bill (Bill Paxton) as he joins his estranged wife Dr Jo Harding (Helen Hunt) and her team to test Dorothy, his invention which gathers data about tornados. Before Mission: Impossible 8 hits our screens this year, you can catch up with the whole iconic action franchise via Prime. It all began with number one, released in 1996, which follows government operative Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) who goes on the run after his mentor Jim Phelps (Jon Voight) is killed during a mission, vowing to retrieve the confidential computer file that will prove his innocence.
