Andy Murray believes Novak Djokovic has already cemented himself as the greatest tennis player of all time as he looks to guide the Serb towards glory at the Australian Open. Djokovic is eyeing a record-extending 11th Australian Open title - as well as a new record of 25 Grand Slam singles titles in Melbourne. The 37-year-old announced in November that his long-time former rival, Murray, would be his new coach for the 2025 season - something the Scot admitted “shocked” him when he was first asked.

Djokovic is now regarded by many as the ‘GOAT’ ahead of retired legends Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Yet despite all of Djokovic’s obvious credentials, he failed to win a single Grand Slam last year for the first time since 2017, while new generation stars Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz swept up the four majors.

Murray believes Djokovic may have taken his eye off the ball for two reasons: Firstly, his focus on winning an elusive Olympic gold medal in Paris - which he succeeded in doing. And secondly, needing to find new motivation after already being crowned the king of tennis.

Murray said: “Novak broke many records in 2023 and the last thing on his bucket list at the time was to win the Olympics,” said the three-time Grand Slam winner. “In my opinion, from watching his matches last year, there was at times a little bit missing, but there wasn't at the Olympics, and at Wimbledon.

“When he was fully motivated and fully focused, he won the Olympics, which is an incredible achievement. I think it was only natural after that for there to be a bit of a let down, because he'd set himself really one target and one goal for the year and he did that.
