Liverpool boss Arne Slot has revealed he asked ex-Kop boss Jurgen Klopp why the team's title challenge collapsed towards the end of last season. The Reds are currently top of the Premier League, leading rivals Arsenal by six points, as they look to improve on Klopp's final season at Anfield by clinching the club's first title since 2020.
Klopp's men were five points clear of Manchester City last season at the same 21-game mark before Pep Guardiola's men overtook them - with Liverpool falling to finish third. Slot insisted his current team cannot be compared to last season's team but said he was keen to hear the German's thoughts on why the team plummeted from such a promising position. Klopp is now working at Red Bull as their Head of Global Soccer.
"It is not something new," he said. "I didn’t know about the five points at this [same] stage, but I knew they were better in the first half of the season than the second half. So you do talk, not now but in the first half of the season, what are your thoughts on why this has happened?.
"Even the first time or second time I spoke to Jurgen, we spoke about what his opinion was as to why they maybe dipped a bit in the end. I don’t think you can compare this season with last season, although there are certain things we have tried to implement already. You are going to ask me what, but I am not going to give you an answer.
"But you know better than me if you can compare last season with this season. I have said this season every single point we had we have deserved and if that was the situation last season as well, well, then being five points [and not winning] is a disappointment.".
