Arsenal player ratings vs Newcastle: Gabriel and Saliba fail Isak test as Odegaard struggles again

Arsenal have left themselves with a mountain to climb in the Carabao Cup semi-finals after they lost their first-leg tie at home to Newcastle. The Magpies ran out 2-0 winners at the Emirates Stadium, with Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon finding the net either side of half-time.
Arsenal had plenty of chances to get back into the tie, though, and Gabriel Martinelli also struck the post before Isak’s opener. The Gunners, however, were wasteful in front of goal and now must overturn a two-goal deficit when the head to St James’ Park for the second leg next month.
Standard Sport’s Simon Collings was at the Emirates to rate the Arsenal players... David Raya 6. Not much he could do about either goal, although may well be disappointed he saved Isak’s shot straight to Gordon’s feet when the winger made it 2-0. Jurrien Timber 6.
Back in the team after serving his suspension. Missed a great chance at 0-0 when he somehow headed over the crossbar from just yards out. William Saliba 5. It is rare you see him this troubled, but Isak caused the Frenchman problems. Missed a good chance from a corner.
Gabriel 6. Like Saliba, had a tough evening trying to deal with Isak, who was excellent. Kept quiet at set-pieces by Dan Burn. Myles Lewis-Skelly 7. Showed his courage on the ball by taking it in some tight spaces and beating his opposite man. A rare positive on a disappointing night.
