Arsenal's priority heading into the January transfer window is a new forward with Mikel Arteta seeking more firepower. The Gunners are seeking to make it third time lucky in the Premier League after two near misses, but remain someway behind Liverpool and the lack of a prolific goalscorer is seen as one of the chinks in their armour. Bukayo Saka has just gone down with injury, further testing their resources.

Arteta will be backed financially and is keeping tabs on a host of players - some playing domestically and others abroad - as he looks to further improve his frontline, where Kai Havertz is currently Arsenal's top league scorer, notching seven times. Three current Premier League stars are on his radar with Newcastle's Alexander Isak among them highly rated at the Emirates. The Swede has long been monitored by Arsenal but the Magpies are unwilling to let their man go in January, especially in his current form. It is understood they value Isak at more than £150million right now, but Arsenal are keeping tabs over a potential change of plans in the summer - depending on whether Newcastle make the Champions League or not, and what effect that duly has on their finances.

Wolves star Matheus Cunha, who has often been their shining light this term, and Bryan Mbeumo at Brentford are two more men on their shortlist. Mbeumo remains a crucial figure at the Bees and they will be loath to lose him mid-season. Looking overseas, the Daily Mail claims that Arsenal could bring Leroy Sane back to English shores. The Bayern Munich man excelled at Manchester City, winning several league titles, before moving to Bayern Munich. Regular minutes though have been hard to come by. He has worked with Mikel Arteta previously, but his huge wages could well be an issue - particularly given his preference to play in Saka's preferred position on the right.
