Aston Villa are hoping to complete a deal for Villarreal defender Juan Foyth to ease their mounting defensive crisis. Tyrone Mings limped off in yesterday’s 1-1 draw with West Ham and is a huge doubt for Wednesday’s vital Champions League tie with Celtic.

Villa sold Diego Carlos to Fernabache for £8.5m last week and Pau Torres is still recovering from a fractured foot so they now only have one fit recognised centre-half: Ezri Konza. Mings, who has twice torn his ACL and only returned in October from his latest knee reconstruction, was visibly upset after leaving the field at Villa Park. However, he was seen smiling and in better spirits on the pitch at the end of the Premier League contest.

Boss Unai Emery said: “The first test we did we think it’s not a long one [injury]. But tomorrow we’ll test again and we’ll know how important it is. Hopefully it’s not a lot and it’s positive.”. On Argentina international Foyth, he added: “Of course I know Juan Foyth because I worked with him [at Villareal]. He is one player, with his quality, he can unite and play with the qualities and the performance we want to add in the squad.

“This transfer window is not easy. We didn’t want him [Carlos] to leave but he decided to leave because he accepted an offer from Turkey.”. Villa took an eight minute lead via Jacob Ramsey but were pegged back by Emerson’s 70th minute equaliser.
