Aston Villa will turn into the All Blacks on Friday night. The Birmingham club has produced a new kit to commemorate its 150th anniversary and has received dispensation to face West Ham wearing it during their FA Cup clash at Villa Park. The strip has been modelled on the first ones ever worn by the club and Villa have trawled their archives to ensure it is as close as possible to the strip worn back in their early days. They have deviated slightly from the process, adding the club crest - the Lion Rampant - which was introduced by William McGregor the founder of the Football League.

Club sponsors Betano and Trade Nation have foregone their sponsorship logos to enable Villa to be as close to the authentic as possible. Chris Heck, president of business operations, said: “This unique anniversary kit was designed by adidas with the inspiration to deliver authenticity which is coming from the great, William McGregor. We are so grateful to have partners that go above and beyond our partnership for the good of the fans, thank you adidas and thank you Betano and Trade Nation.”.

Villa beat Aston Villa on the opening weekend of the season with the two teams not squaring off again until this weekend. The two claret and blue outfits will play each other in the Premier League come the end of January. Since making the final a decade ago Villa have been unable to make it past the fourth round. Last year it was Chelsea who ended their dreams, securing a dominant win in a replay at Villa Park. The year prior to that it was Stevenage who knocked out Villa.
