The average salary advertised for jobs in the UK has exceeded £40,000 for the first time, according to research from job site Adzuna. This pay hike for advertised jobs is attributed to the ongoing demand for skilled staff and cautious hiring practices by employers. Over the past year, the average advertised salary has risen from £37,577 to its current level.
The Adzuna study also found a ratio of two job seekers per vacancy, with the average time to fill job openings increasing by nearly two days to 34 over the past year. Jobs in the legal sector were filled the quickest, typically taking 31 days, whereas domestic help and cleaning roles, as well as those in healthcare and nursing, took the longest, averaging 38 and 37 days, respectively. However, the study revealed that more than half of employers failed to include salary information in job postings, making 2024 the worst year on record for salary transparency.
Andrew Hunter, Adzuna's co-founder, commented: "Jobseekers who were hoping for a continued streak of growth in available roles following November’s bounce will be disappointed, as vacancies fell again in December. He added: "This could be attributed to the seasonal hiring slowing down over the Christmas period.".
He noted that while some sectors, such as teaching, are experiencing a high number of job postings, other areas, including legal, logistics & warehouse, and sales roles, have seen an annual increase in job openings compared to the same time last year. "While it appears companies are not hiring as much, they are loosening their purse strings, with the average advertised salary now reaching over £40,000 for the first time since we started tracking the UK job market in 2016.".
