Following teenage superstar Luke Littler’s heroic triumph at the Darts World Championship, darts is very much on the agenda. The 17-year-old comfortably beat former champion Michael van Gerwen to remarkably pick up the trophy at such a young age, and become the youngest ever winner by some distance.

If Littler’s stunning performances have inspired you to throw a bit of tungsten, you’re not alone. I’d always liked darts, and like many casual fans, watched it at Christmas, plus the odd big TV game here and there. But it was Littler’s remarkable run to the final a year ago that inspired me to take to the oche myself - and I’ve never looked back. Throwing some arrows is now part of my daily life and I don’t half enjoy it.

If you’re keen to give it a go yourself, I’ve picked out a few starter sets that are worth considering. Where possible, it’s generally best to opt for Tungsten darts, rather than brass. Lots of the starter boards that come with darts included tend to come with brass darts, which are, frankly, a bit rubbish.

They’re generally thicker in the barrel, which tends to make grouping your darts more challenging (some are so thick I doubt even Luke Littler could hit a 180 with them), while brass doesn’t tend to be as durable as tungsten over time. It can take a bit of trial and error to discover which style of darts suit you best, so I personally started out with some cheaper sets until I found what was working for me.
