Brentford January transfer window guide: Chelsea exile could be ideal signing with transfer need clear

Last season saw Brentford suffer so many serious injuries that the club launched an internal investigation into the matter in April, by which time 29 first-team injuries had been sustained. This campaign risks following that worrying trend. Standard Sport learned in December that Brentford were not planning to sign any players in January unless they suffered further injuries that unbalanced the look of the squad and left them short in some areas.
Since then, the injuries have continued to pile up to a worrying extent and it remains to be seen whether the Bees’ recruitment team feel they must enter the market after all. By a long way, the full-back positions are causing Brentford the biggest problems. They got through almost all of last season without first-choice options Aaron Hickey and Rico Henry due to injury.
This term, they are set to be without Hickey all season once more, while Henry’s recovery from a second career ACL injury has suffered setbacks. Sepp van den Berg and Kristoffer Ajer, centre-backs by trade, have filled it at full-back, while Mads Roerslev and young summer signing Jayden Meghoma have not played regularly.
Manager Thomas Frank recently hailed the impact Sergio Reguilon had on loan after arriving last January. It would be understandable if the Bees were monitoring potential loans in both full-back positions. The Bees could also do with a centre-back. Ajer, Van den Berg, Ben Mee, Nathan Collins and Ethan Pinnock would usually be enough cover, but injuries have impacted three of those players to differing extents this season.
