BREXIT got done five years ago today — but has never felt in greater peril. Remainers have seized the anniversary to reheat preposterous claims of it having “failed”. Labour, sadly, is listening. But the idea Brexit caused our economic woes, not war in Europe or two hellish years of Covid, is utter nonsense. So is the clamour for this independence project, designed for long-term gains, to be junked after just five years (or less, factoring in the “transition period”).

Some benefits are already obvious. Scores of new trade deals, including joining the vast CPTPP. New defence partnerships. Thousands of EU laws binned or rewritten. All those lives saved by Brexit enabling the rapid rollout of Covid jabs. But many in Labour loathed Brexit and love Europe. Attorney General Richard Hermer has vowed NEVER to challenge an ECHR ruling. That’s not an EU court — but the desire for subservience to European institutions is blatant.

The Government would be insane economically and politically to compromise our historic decision in talks with Brussels next week. Many EU economies are in tatters. We should capitalise on our independence with FAR greater vigour — not shackle ourselves to them again. That way lies impotent stagnation. EVEN Rachel Reeves cannot have expected to face an immediate moment of truth in the “growth vs Net Zero” battle.

The day after the Chancellor’s speech about prioritising our prosperity even over eco concerns, a court sides with green campaigners to halt development of a vast North Sea oil and gas reserve. This ruling, which Energy Secretary Ed Miliband refused to contest, decided that future emissions should have been taken into account. That’s a stipulation to thwart almost everything, including the Heathrow runway Ms Reeves cheerfully claims will open in just ten years.

A big test, then, for a Government supposedly genuine about growth. Green-light the oil and gas sites again and bank the boost to our economy. Or capitulate, pray for other growth and hope Miliband’s hot air will power Britain. THE Sun’s fearless Jerome Starkey braves bombs and bullets to bring our readers the truth on Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine. Compare him with Vladimir Putin, cowering in the Kremlin feeding hapless young men into the meat grinder of his demented imperialist obsessions.
