A teacher who appeared on hit Channel 4 show Educating Cardiff has been charged with sex offences. Gareth Ritter, who won an award for his use of technology in the classroom as assistant head and music teacher at Cardiff's Willows High school in 2013, is charged with sexual assault, two counts of making an indecent image of a child and one count of distributing an indecent image of a child, according to WalesOnline.
The 43-year-old will face trial at Cardiff Crown Court in November this year. He has also been suspended from the teaching register. Ritter appeared in the fourth series of Channel 4's fly-on-the-wall series Educating Cardiff in 2015, documenting the highs and lows of working in a school. It followed headteacher Joy Ballard and her team of teachers - including Ritter - as they tried to transform one of the worst performing schools in Cardiff into one to be proud of. Previous BAFTA-winning series have run in Essex, Yorkshire and London's East End.
As well as being a teacher, Ritter was also conductor of Ebbw Valley Brass Band, a post the four-time Welsh conductor of the year is now said to have resigned from "due to personal reasons". Ritter first appeared at Cardiff Magistrates Court in November 2024. A month later in December 2024, the Education Workforce Council listed an interim suspension order on Ritter's teacher registration. It says he is "ineligible for registration – subject to interim suspension order".
South Wales Police confirmed: "Gareth Ritter from Monmouthshire appeared at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on November 5, 2024.". A Cardiff Council spokesman added: "The council is unable to comment until criminal proceedings are concluded.". Do you have a story to share? Email me at katie.wilson01@reachplc.com.
