There's nothing more frustrating than seeing a bunch of bananas go bad, especially with the current high food prices. However, a renowned chef has revealed a trick to keep them fresh for weeks. Bananas are a staple in many homes due to their high fibre, antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium and magnesium content, making them an excellent addition to a balanced diet.

But they can spoil quickly, turning brown and mushy, so proper storage is crucial if you want to enjoy them longer, minimise food waste and save money. Most people simply place them in their fruit bowl or hang them on a banana tree after shopping, which can help prevent bruising and allow them to ripen evenly, while also freeing up kitchen counter space.

But a top chef has shared another method to extend their shelf life even further. Buying a mix of ripe and green bananas is a practical way to ensure you have enough for the week without needing to make frequent trips to the store. But professional chef Peter Sidwell of CookServeEnjoy has another great tip to keep your bananas in prime condition. He suggests that since bananas need warm, bright and moist conditions to ripen, it's best to store them in a cool location, away from heat sources and condensation.

Also, avoid placing them near windows as sunlight can speed up the ripening process. It's also advisable to remove any wrappers, as cellophane can accelerate the process too. Once your bananas have reached the desired level of ripeness, you can refrigerate them. Peter, a food expert, suggests using a special bag for storing them in the fridge.
