A chef has revealed why bananas should be removed from fruit bowls and shared how you can get them to last for weeks. Stephanie Dulgarian, founder of Somewhat Simple, has warned that people are storing the fruit completely wrong. The cook stressed that placing bananas in a fruit bowl can make them turn mushy and black.

Bananas are already at a disadvantage once they are ripe, which means piling them in a fruit bowl would only make them spoil faster. According to Stephanie, most fruits release a natural plant hormone called ethylene gas which triggers the ripening stage. This is why foodies should avoid storing bananas alongside other fruits. Stephanie explained that you can prolong the ripening process, by using a fridge or a common kitchen item. Despite some experts opting against using a fridge, Stephanie says that as long as you don't mind what the banana looks like, then it's fine.

Stephanie said: “Have you ever tried refrigerating bananas? If you don’t care about the peels looking brown or even black, give this method a try! The peels will turn brown much faster, but the fruit itself lasts weeks longer! They stay firm and fresh and they taste delicious!”.

It is a common misconception that bananas cannot be refrigerated since it causes the peel to turn black, but this is simply because it is a tropical fruit that is not used to cold temperatures. The fruit inside will still be yellow and fresh and will stay editable for two weeks longer than if kept in a fruit bowl. However, it should be noted that only bananas that have ripened and have a yellow peel should be stored in the fridge. Green bananas are still un-ripened and if stored at a cold temperature they will never properly ripen and develop their flavour, reports Express.
