A child out sledding in the snow with their grandmother fell into a frozen pond when they slid down a hill and into the water and later died in hospital. Police and fire crews were called at around 9.15pm on Saturday and discovered a youngster in the water. They were rushed to hospital but, tragically, succumbed to the effects from being submerged in the subzero water.

A neighbour told WFMY News a family of a grandmother and a mother were out sledding when one of the children slid down a hill. Unable to stop, they went into the water at Stoney Creek Golf Club. It is currently unknown how old the child was. Two fire officers and three members of the public, who had helped with the rescue, were also taken to hospital for treatment.

The Sheriff's office in Guilford County, North Carolina, said in a statement: “Sheriff Danny H. Rogers reports on January 11, 2025, Guilford County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) responded to a 911 call regarding a water rescue. The GCSO was joined by the Whitsett Fire Department, McLeansville Fire Department, Greensboro Fire Department, Guilford County Fire Department, and the Guilford County Emergency Services in response to the incident.

“Upon arrival, emergency responders located a child in the water. The child was immediately transported to a local hospital and later succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident. “Two first responders and three civilians who assisted with the rescue were transported to a local hospital as well for medical examination. Preliminary information indicates the tragic event occurred because of a sledding accident.
