Upset shoppers claim to have made their purchases from one of three main brands, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Lidl. Many distressed customers have taken to social media to express their disappointment. One user on X, formerly known as Twitter, said: "And the award for ruining Christmas goes to @sainsburys for selling my mum a turkey that's well and truly off.".

"No Christmas dinner for us today....". Someone else put: "Well done Sainsbury's Christmas is officially ruined!.

The caption was posted alongside pictures of a turkey which appeared ominously dark in some places. According to the label, the £14.36 main should have offered enough for seven portions and been safe to eat until December 27.

A spokesperson for the online platform was quick to respond. Karen replied: "Hi there. Thanks for getting in touch. I'm sorry there's an issue with your turkey. Can you let me know if this was bought in store or online please? I'll look into this for you. Thanks, Karen.".
