Los Angeles is experiencing wildfires which have ravaged parts of the city, forcing thousands of people to evacuate for their safety. The death toll has risen to at least 24 people, with tens of thousands of homes being destoryed and residents being displaced as a result of the blaze.
Paris Hilton, James Woods, Mel Gibson, Leighton Meester, and Adam Brody are among the celebrities who have lost their homes. Declaring a major disaster on Tuesday, January 7, President Joe Biden pledged on Thursday, January 9 that the federal government would cover all recovery costs for the next 180 days, including temporary shelters, first responder salaries, and the disposal of debris and hazardous materials.
What other climate disasters have happened in 2025? Here’s the full list. On New Year's Day, the Met Office issued severe weather warnings after a 24-hour rainfall total of about 90 mm (3.5 in) caused flooding in parts of England and Wales. The Environment Agency (EA) then issued 137 flood warnings throughout England, Scotland, and Wales, with North West England, particularly Greater Manchester, experiencing widespread flooding.
In response to flooding in Bolton, Didsbury, Harpurhey, Stalybridge, Stockport, and Wigan, as well as in portions of Cheshire and Lancashire, Greater Manchester Police declared a major incident. According to Greater Manchester Police, several people were rescued from cars stuck in floodwaters, while others were trapped in their homes without running water.
