Cortes on the sidelines for Rangers yet again... but Clement is adamant he has no regrets over agreement to sign him for £4million this summer

When it came to recruiting footballers for Rangers, Alex McLeish had one golden rule. Showcase reels from agents showing what their clients could do would only be viewed once attendance records had been scrutinised. Only those who turned up for their work were worthy of further consideration.
The former Ibrox manager’s view on the value of talents who make a home for themselves in treatment rooms was recalled on Friday when Philippe Clement confirmed another spell on the sidelines for Oscar Cortes. Although the Belgian hopes the issue is short-term, through absolutely no fault of his own, the Colombian winger is accruing too many of these absences.
Having joined initially on a six-month loan from Lens a year ago, Cortes featured seven times only for a knee injury to end his season in February. His return to Rangers on a season-long loan came with an obligation to buy for £4million this summer and a guarantee from Clement that the player would justify the faith he had in him.
Rangers boss Philippe Clement speaks to Oscar Cortes during the game against St Johnstone. Clement insists the agreement in place to sign Cortes for £4m remains a good deal. Taken off with a knee injury on the opening day at Tynecastle and with just eight appearances this term before the latest set-back, Cortes has still to do that.
Yet to play 90 minutes in a Rangers shirt in a year in Glasgow, Lens must be delighted they have a binding agreement in place. Insistent that he harbours no doubts over Cortes’ suitability for the tough-and-tumble of Scottish game, though, Clement says he wouldn’t hesitate to make such a commitment if he could turn back time.
