RANGERS CONFIDENTIAL: Forget the player-trading model for now... it's back to short-term solutions for Clement in transfer window

The names being linked to Rangers in the January transfer window tell you all you need to know about Philippe Clement’s current injury crisis. The Ibrox club are down to the bare bones at the back, with centre-backs John Souttar, Leon Balogun and Nana Kasanwirjo, as well as captain James Tavernier, all out injured at present.
It should comes as no surprise, then, that defenders are front and centre when it comes to transfer speculation down Govan way. Former Rangers defender Nikola Katic is the latest name to be thrown into the ring, with the Bosnian international said to be keen on a return to Glasgow.
At 28 years old, he doesn’t quite fit the player-trading model that Rangers have been trying - and failing - to get off the ground. Manchester United’s Jonny Evans, at 37, is another who has been mentioned as a possible recruit, with Scotland and Watford centre-half Ryan Porteous at least a younger option at 25.
Clement has little time to find defensive reinforcements for Rangers amid injury crisis. Former Rangers defender Nicola Katic is said to be keen on a return to Ibrox. Jonny Evans, above left, of Manchester United has also been linked with a move to Rangers.
Watford's Ryan Porteous would at least be a younger option than veteran Evans. What’s clear is that, with huge funds not available to Clement but the need for reinforcements seemingly great, Rangers yet again could be forced into looking at short-term options.
