Crystal Palace will rebuff Chelsea's offer to re-sign centre-back Marc Guehi with the south London club's £70m valuation of the England international much higher than what his former side are currently willing to pay. With France international Wesley Fofana ruled out for the season because of injury, Chelsea are looking to strengthen their defence and believe Guehi, who came through their academy before being sold to Palace in 2021 for £18m, fits the bill.

Newcastle tried to sign the Crystal Palace centre half last summer but the clubs could not agree a fee. Guehi, who is regularly wearing the Eagles' captain's armband, has entered the final 18 months of his deal at Selhurst Park, meaning his value to Palace will begin decreasing. There is no suggestion yet that the 24-year-old will sign a new deal with the club.

But with Oliver Glasner ’s team in 15th position, five points clear of the relegation places, they will likely resist any offers below their valuation this month - though there will be renewed interest come the summer. Chelsea had inserted a 20% sell-on clause in the 2021 deal, which could complicate matters if they bring him back to Stamford Bridge. They also have an option to match an offer made by any other club before he is sold by Palace.

Newcastle and Premier League leaders Liverpool may also maintain their interest - especially if Virgil van Dijk departs Anfield in the summer. Guehi is now established as one of the Premier League best defenders and his central role in England’s run to last summer’s European Championship final boosted his reputation further.
