Death in Paradise fans have been left heartbroken after the show seemed to confirm Selwyn Patterson's (played by Don Warrington) exit. In the first episode, which aired last week, JP Hooper (Tobi Bakare) told the Commissioner that his job role was being dissolved—and the news didn't go down very well. Don has played Selwyn since the beginning of the series, and during that time, he has worked alongside each lead detective, most recently Mervin Wilson (Don Gilet).
However, during the most recent instalment, Selwyn spoke with Catherine (Elizabeth Bourgine) about his job. "Selwyn, JP just called and told me about your job and that they're phasing it out," Catherine said. "I knew something wasn't right about you. But they can't do this.". "But, it seems they can and they have," Selwyn replied. "The Chief Commissioner officially informed me yesterday. It seems it comes back to one thing, to save money.".
"But we need you here," Catherine argued. "The island needs you, so, what are you going to do?". Selwyn simply replied: "I don't know.". Fans have been left heartbroken by the news Selwyn is could be leaving the show, and many took to social media to share their thoughts. Taking to a Facebook fan page, one fan wrote: "Without the Commissioner there is not Death in Paradise.". Another wrote with a crying-face emoji: "Oh no it wouldn't be the same without Selwyn.".
While a third added: "They better not get rid of Selwyn.". "No, the Commissioner is one of the most interesting characters," someone else shared. "I want to know more about him, not see him being shipped off.". A fifth fan pleaded: "They can't get rid of Serlwyn! He is so much more than the Commissioner.". Another fumed: "Nooo, they can't get rid of him, the worst decision ever.". When speaking about his future on the show and how the Commissioner reacts to the news, Don said: "It’s shocking for him, and he does his best to get the superiors to change their decision and see things differently.".
He added to the Mirror: "It’s very interesting because we discover other aspects of Selwyn, and that's always the joy of playing a character like him - there are so many different sides to him. "You think you know about somebody, but due to life events, you learn more about them. He’s opening up, he’s a bit like a flower coming in to bloom.". Death in Paradise returns next Friday at 9pm on BBC One.
