A new romantic drama that left viewers 'thinking for hours' will be available to stream in the UK next week. Queer, which premiered at Venice Film Festival last September, is the latest film from James Bond star Daniel Craig. Set in 1950s Mexico City, it follows William Lee (Craig), an American expat who falls in love with a much younger man (Drew Starkey).
The R-rated romance is based on William S Burroughs' 1985 novella of the same name, and was helmed by Oscar-nominated director Luca Guadagnino. Moviegoers will know Guadagnino for his 2017 hit film Call Me By Your Name, which propelled Timothee Chalamet to fame. He is also acclaimed for his tennis blockbuster Challengers, which starred Zendaya and Josh O'Connor.
Following its USA debut in November 2024, MUBI has now announced that UK and Ireland viewers can stream Queer exclusively on the platform from January 31. Although the A24 feature only had a limited theatrical release in America, it has already received overwhelming praise from early viewers.
The critics on Rotten Tomatoes awarded it a 77% rating, and applauded Craig in their consensus. "A phantasmagorical distillation of William S. Burroughs' preoccupations that's by turns meandering and vital, Queer marks one of Daniel Craig's most sterling performances yet," they reviewed.
