Diane Langton is fondly remembered for her work on Hollyoaks but the long-running Channel 4 series isn’t the only soap that she appeared in during her celebrated career. The TV legend, who died at the age of 77 on January 15, also starred in a handful of EastEnders during the late 90s as Bev Williams.

Bev, as longtime fans might recall, was the mum of mainstay and Walford troublemaker Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins). Cindy was famously killed off in 1998 while in prison – a decision that was reversed 25 years later. At the time, Bev – who was named Lucy during a previous appearance – met with Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) at the coroner’s office following the supposed death of her daughter.

The matriarch informed Ian that she had been estranged from Cindy until just before her death, when she reached out looking for money. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video.

Up Next. Almost three decades later, Cindy staged a historic return from the dead, with show bosses explaining that she had been in witness protection for 25 years. Diane was asked about Cindy’s return to EastEnders in 2024. ‘Cindy was supposed to have died in prison giving birth,’ she told Inside Soap.

‘And Bev said she was there when it happened! As Cindy went into police protection, did Bev know she was still alive and kept her mouth shut?’. ‘Was Bev lying all along? We never saw it play out on screen…’. It was confirmed earlier this week that TV icon Diane had passed away earlier at the age of 77. She is best known for her work on Hollyoaks, where she played Marlena ‘Nana’ McQueen for 18 years.
