Doctor says to eat popular snack after alcohol to help with low blood sugar

A doctor has revealed the foods he recommends eating after drinking alcohol to boost hydration and help blood sugar levels. Keeping hydrated is key if you've enjoyed a few drinks because 'dehydration is one of the most common causes of a hangover', Dr Donald Grant, GP and Senior Clinical Advisor at The Independent Pharmacy, explains.
Fortunately, there are lots of tasty snacks you can enjoy for a boost, including bananas. The expert told the Mirror: "Upon returning home from a night out, I strongly advise that people opt for hydrating foods, as this can help replenish hydration that is lost through alcohol consumption. Bananas are a great source of this while and also provide potassium - a key nutrient that alcohol also reduces.".
If you're feeling up to it, you might wish to enjoy your banana with porridge, another snack the GP recommended. "Aside from hydrating foods, I suggest consuming some carbohydrates such as oats or porridge. "Not only are these foods calm on the stomach, but they also contain complex carbohydrates which help with fatigue and low blood sugar," the expert shared.
It's also important to replace lost fluids with drinks like water, soda water, and isotonic drinks. Dr Grant recommends coconut water, in particular, for hydration and electrolytes. Equally, remember to eat before you start drinking, and don't drink more than your body can handle, as the NHS advises.
