Many of us are quick to bin bananas once they've turned brown and overripe - but a fresh produce expert has revealed two genius ways to make the most out of the tropical fruit. Shockingly, research shows that each Brit tosses away an astonishing 115 bananas annually, which adds up to a whopping 3.2 billion based on the 28.4 million households in the UK. Joe Clark, who also shares tips on growing your own fruits and veggies online, took to TikTok to share his banana wisdom.

Holding up a bunch of significantly browned bananas, he started: "Next time your bananas start to look like this, you can use them to whip up a quick treat for you and your plants. Sometimes old bananas are just binned, which is a real shame as they're so versatile.".

First, Joe peeled his bananas - saving the skins for later - before mashing the fruit in a bowl. He then added brown sugar and self-raising flour, mixing the ingredients until it formed a dough. "Roll out [with a rolling pin on a flat surface] until it's about 1cm thick, brush on some melted butter and sprinkle some cinnamon - then slice and roll into buns and bake on gas mark 5 for about 25 minutes," he continued.

"This will give you the most scrumptious zero-waste banana cinnamon swirls, which truly are a delight." Joe has some sweet advice for those who love to bake and have a green thumb, but he warns: "Now the mixture can be incredibly sticky so please add flour to your surface and rolling pin and wet your hands to stop this all becoming a sticky mess. For every 150g of banana I use 110g of flour and 1 cup of brown sugar.".
