Drivers face 'maximum' fuel limit when getting petrol or diesel at Tesco forecourts

Tesco drivers need to be aware of the little known fuel rule when filling up at its petrol forecourts. The supermarket chain reiterated its rules regarding filling up jerry cans at its forecourts this month after the rules started trending online. Tesco's petrol rules are not new and have been in place for several years. However, some drivers may not be aware of them, and some have been caught out in recent years.
So if you're thinking of filling up your jerry can at Tesco, you'll need to be aware that the supermarket will only allow you to fill up two containers, and the combined volume of each container must not exceed 30 litres. These rules apply to both petrol and diesel pumps.
According to the rules listed on Tesco's website, only authorised plastic or metal containers can be used, with the maximum capacity for a plastic container being 10 litres, and the maximum for metal is 20 litres. Alongside this, the containers must also be clearly marked with:.
The cans should also have the manufacturer’s name and the date and month of manufacture. A spokesperson from Tesco said: “The maximum amount that can be legally stored by a private individual, without formally notifying the Petroleum Enforcement Authority, is 30 litres. Under the Petroleum Consolidation Regulations, we are required to have a policy in place to ensure the safe use of portable fuel containers at our petrol stations.”.
Tesco's petrol rules are displayed on its website and last updated in February 2024. It's also important to note that there is no fuel shortages in the UK at the moment. The idea of a "maximum" fuel limit could potentially lead to concerns about this, but currently, things are stable. Back in 2021, when there were shortages at petrol stations across the country - which were exasperated by online reports warning of shortages - the sales of jerry cans rose by 1,650%, according to Halfords.
