A tourist hotspot in Dublin has been slammed as a 'rip off' after a customer shared a receipt that showed they had been charged almost €50 (£41.91) for five pints of Guinness. The Temple Bar Pub, which was established in 1840 and is located in the buzzy Temple Bar area of the Irish capital has welcomed celebrities including David Beckham and son Cruz, and is brimming every day with tourists gasping for a pint of The Black Stuff.
The receipt in question, which was posted on X (formerly Twitter) by the account PintsO'Guinness on January 23, included five pints of the famous stout totalling €49.75 (£41.70) - which puts each one at €9.95 (£8.34). As well as the five pints of Guinness, the customer had ordered a pint of Harp Lager for €10.95 (£9.18), a Bailey's for €10.85 (£9.09), a Smirnoff vodka for €9.95 (£8.34) and a soft drink for €4.45 (£3.73), bringing the total to €85.95 (£72.05).
According to the Irish Pub Guide, the average price of a pint of Guinness 'or any stout' in May 2024 in Ireland was €5.77 (£4.84). While The Temple Bar Pub is considered one of the most popular tourist hangouts in Dublin, people have branded it the 'biggest rip off in the country' after seeing the photo of the receipt.
Beneath the post, which has been viewed more than 110,000 times and attracted 140 comments, one user wrote: 'Went [to] Dublin didn't go there as it's a rip off. More reasonable places serving the black stuff'. Another was equally unforgiving, likening the pub's prices to those found in notoriously expensive central London.
