There were more heart-wrenching scenes for EastEnders’ Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) in the aftermath of his suicide attempt on Tuesday. At the start of the week, fans of the BBC soap saw the Walford stalwart devastatingly attempt to end his life by running a car engine inside the Arches. After becoming choked by fumes, he fell into the grease pit and knocked himself unconscious. During the latest visit to Walford, Phil was found the following morning by cousins Teddy, Billy and Harry Mitchell (Roland Manookian, Perry Fenwick and Elijah Holloway) and he was quickly rushed to hospital.

His family believed he had simply suffered a nasty accident, while he also tried to fob friend Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) off by claiming it was high blood pressure that caused him to collapse. However, it was a chance conversation with Mo Harris (Laila Morse) that later caused Nigel to scratch beneath the surface.

After hearing about Phil’s accident, Mo told Nigel about how Phil had secretly gifted Billy and fiancée Honey (Emma Barton) £10,000 for their wedding, making out it was from Billy’s estranged dad Stevie Mitchell (Alan Ford). Recognising this was a bad sign about Phil’s mental state, Nigel rushed home to confront him and try and offer support. Phil was angered by his friend’s insinuation he had attempted to take his life, and launched into a tirade of abuse before ordering Nigel to move out of his spare room.

At the café, Nigel later bumped into Phil’s ex-wife Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean), where they shared their concerns, with Nigel remarking Phil needs help from ‘a bodyguard’. This was seemingly a clue to the imminent return of Phil’s brother Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp), who is set to make his way back to Walford next week. Meanwhile, back at home, Phil’s state of mind had further worsened. He was seen ranting at someone, before it was revealed to viewers that there was no one else in the room at all. Bosses previously announced that as part of the storyline, Phil would begin hallucinating and seeing visions, which will soon take fans back to an event from his life in 1985.
