Fans have been convinced all week that Martin's story on the soap may come to an end during the live episode, with EastEnders teasing ahead of the 40th anniversary specials that not everyone would make it out of the burning pub alive.
The end of the live episode saw Martin pass away moments after the beam was pulled off his legs, with Stacey cradling him as he lay lifeless on the floor of the Queen Vic.
It comes after last night's episode saw some Walford residents become trapped in the burning Queen Vic after Reiss Colwell crashed his car into the pub, swerving to avoid Ian Beale who had been pushed into the road by wife Cindy Beale.
Tonight's live episode saw the aftermath of Martin getting stuck under the beam whilst rescuing Stacey Slater (played by Lacey Turner) earlier this week.
Martin - who has been played by James, 40, since 2014 - died in tonight's live episode of the BBC show as part of its 40th anniversary week.
