Emma Raducanu has revealed she texted Andy Murray to apologise after she withdrew from their mixed doubles match at Wimbledon last year to spoil his farewell plans. The 22-year-old was set to pair up with Murray in the doubles in SW19 last summer but pulled out after suffering from stiffness in her wrist, leading to criticism after it prevented the Scot from rounding off his career at Wimbledon.
Murray's mother Judy was among the dissenting voices as she called Raducanu's decision "astounding", and she has now admitted she reached out to the legendary Scot to make sure he "didn't hate her". She said: "Afterwards I sent him a long message basically apologising if I caused any trouble at Wimbledon, that's definitely the last thing I want,” she said. “I really wanted to smooth things over.
"Whether or not I can go back and turn back time and do things differently, that's in the past. I wanted to take the initiative, because growing up, he was one of my idols, and he still is, with everything he's achieved in the game. "It didn't feel right, so I texted him and he replied, and it was like a really nice message. So I'm glad I did that and I just hope he doesn't hate me too much!".
Murray has since retired from tennis after rounding off his career at the Olympics with Dan Evans as they reached the quarter-finals in Paris, and has now become a coach to former rival Novak Djokovic. Raducanu is in Melbourne for the Australian Open and beat Amanda Anisimova to reach the third round of the Grand Slam this week.
