Rene Hake is in the frame for the vacant West Brom job two months on from his Manchester United exit. Hake, 53, was signed up by United in the summer as part of a revamp of Erik ten Hag's coaching staff. But the Dutchman's assistant was also given the boot when Ruben Amorim was appointed as Ten Hag's successor back in November.

The former FC Twente and Utretcht chief could be set for a swift return to work, though, as he is in contention to succeed Carlos Corberan at the Hawthorns. As outlined by BBC Sport, the Championship outfit have Hake on their shortlist as they continue their search for a new head coach, with former Young Boys boss Raphael Wicky also under consideration.

West Brom were rocked by Corberan's departure on Christmas Eve when the popular Baggies boss was lured to Valencia. Former midfielder Chris Brunt, Damia Abella and Boaz Myhill have taken charge on an interim basis and are expected to remain at the helm for this weekend's FA Cup third round tie at Bournemouth.

While Hake boasts managerial experience, he was brought to England to work under Ten Hag alongside compatriot Ruud van Nistelrooy in the summer. It was hoped that appointing the duo as part of a refresh of Ten Hag's backroom team would help the former Ajax chief kick on after a calamitous 2023-24 campaign. But that did not prove to be the case and Ten Hag was sacked just months after having his contract extended by the club during the summer break.
