As the chill sets in and daylight dwindles, gardens across the UK are bracing for the tough months ahead. The frosty climate can strip lawns of their lushness, leading to unsightly patches or worse, grass death, if neglected. To combat this, John Harris from GreenThumb, a lawn care specialist, has revealed his essential advice for prepping your green space for winter.
"Winter brings several challenges for lawns, from frost damage to nutrient depletion," he said. "Left unchecked, these issues can weaken your grass, making it harder for your lawn to recover in spring. "But with a few simple adjustments, you can protect your lawn and ensure it remains resilient throughout the season." Now's the perfect time to fortify your lawn's health by feeding it appropriate nutrients for the impending cold.
"Winter-specific fertilisers contain less nitrogen, reducing the risk of soft growth that's vulnerable to winter conditions," Tom noted, reports the Express. "These fertilisers focus on building strong roots with phosphorus and enhancing cold resistance with potassium. Some also include trace elements like iron, which keeps your lawn looking green even in colder weather.".
And as we edge into cooler days, it's crucial to tweak your mowing habits. In autumn, it's best to leave the grass slightly longer than the summer trim, advises the expert. He explained that longer grass helps insulate the roots and offers better protection against frost.
