Fans of Severance have been left reeling after a huge twist was uncovered at the end of the latest instalment of season two, with many hailing it as ‘easily the best episode of TV’. The Apple TV+ drama returned to our screens last month after a huge wait, with Mark S (Adam Scott), Helly R (Britt Lower), Irving B (John Turturro) and Dylan G (Zach Cherry) heading back to the macrodata refinement team to continue their mysterious jobs at Lumon.

Following the premiere, there had been countless theories on Reddit questioning whether Helly’s outie, Lumon heiress Helena Eagan, had secretly gone undercover on the severed floor to influence the MDR crew after their coup at the end of the first series. We finally got answers in the newest episode, titled Woe’s Hollow, when the innies were sent on an outdoor retreat to discover the history of the company, led by Seth Milchick (Tramell Tillman).

Things took a turn when Irv voiced his suspicions of his colleague’s true nature during the getaway, vowing that Helena was masquerading as an innie and was secretly a member of founder Kier Eagan’s family. In gripping scenes, he drew attention to her changing attitudes and insisted that ‘Helly was never cruel’, before questioning ‘who would have the power to send their outie to the severed floor?’.

Submerging her underwater, he begged their boss to ‘turn her back’, leading Helena to plead: ‘Goddamn it, Seth! Do it!’. Seconds after Milchick ordered a mysterious figure to ‘remove the Glasgow block’, Helly R awakened and was reunited with her team – but the move meant that Irv was fired almost immediately. Before the final credits rolled, he was warned: ‘It will be as if you, Irving B, never even existed nor drew a single breath upon this earth.’.

Viewers were stunned over the bombshell ending, and flocked to social media to unpack the chilling final scenes. Twitter user Will Hansen wrote: ‘I couldn’t be more on board the Severance train. This show is ELITE television. Woe’s Hollow is easily one of the best episodes of TV I’ve ever watched.’. Karen agreed: ‘Holy s**t this was John Turturro episode, this has to winning him an Emmy he was outstanding and so good proving why he’s one of the greatest actors on earth.

‘My man Irving is the smartest in Lumon, he knew it from the beginning, we’re gonna miss your Irving B. #Severance [sic].’. ‘#Severance is honestly already a top all-time show and I don’t even think it’s debatable…,’ Corey Neal tweeted. ‘No one has a F**KING CLUE where this show is going, but not in a complex I’m confused way, the acting is top shelf, writing & production, phenomenal. This show is a masterpiece.’.
Posting a video of Irv demanding Helly’s return, Val vowed: ‘This scene will haunt me for the rest of my life #severance.’. As Robert WR added: ‘Easily the best show on TV and perhaps the best show ever. I can’t get enough of #severance.’. Over on Reddit, users demanded award recognition for both John and Britt for their efforts. TheBiggestJig insisted: ‘John Turturro is running laps around everyone on tv today.’.
Kissmeurbeautiful penned: ‘God Britt’s acting in that confrontation with Irv. You can literally see her switching back and forth between Helly and Helena.’. Wlkwih2 commented: ‘Her change of expression after saying Irving made my blood freeze.’. ‘S**t that Helly face shift made all my blood run cold,’ Tacobelle55 praised. Shedding light on how Helena and Helly – as well as the MDR team as a whole – move on from the work trip from hell, Britt teased that she was happy to be back as her severed character.
‘Hopefully, when Helly R comes back properly now, it will be to a sense of having missed her,’ she told AV Club. ‘I certainly felt that as an actor. It felt really good to be back in her perspective in a clearer sense after episode four. ‘There’s a rollercoaster ahead that I feel like no one is ready for. I think what’s cool now is that you can and should go back and rewatch the first four episodes to pick up on new things before you dive into five.
‘One of the big questions of the series is who has autonomy over their bodies. Is it the outie, the innie, or both? And questions of free will and consent are cracked open here very delicately.’.
