Liam Ryan has been cleared by the AFL after the West Coast Eagles star was alleged to have been involved in a street brawl earlier this month. A video that allegedly showed the small forward engaging in a fight with another man went viral last month. The footage showed two individuals, one of which appeared to be Ryan, trading punches in front of a crowd of onlookers following a festival in Western Australia on January 17.

The AFL's Integrity Unit has today announced that it has concluded its inquiries into the matter, determining that Ryan and his group 'were the victims of an attack by a larger group of people' after they had attempted to leave the event. The AFL and WA Police determined that Ryan, who had been attending the event with his partner Evana, had acted to 'de-escalate' tensions. 'The league today concluded its inquiries into a video that surfaced on social media of West Coast Eagles player Liam Ryan being involved in a physical altercation following a festival held in Fremantle on January 17, 2025,' the league said in a statement.

The AFL has since cleared Ryan of any wrongdoing, with its Integrity Unit stating that the altercation had taken place after the footballer and his companions had been confronted. 'The AFL Integrity Unit inquiries and investigations by WA Police determined that the altercation occurred after Ryan and his companions were the victims of an attack by a larger group of people whilst leaving the event.

'WA police confirmed to the AFL that officers were in the area at the time of the fight and that Ryan was being treated as a witness to an incident where his group was pursued by a larger group, resulting in one of his female companions being assaulted and suffering facial injuries. 'It was determined that Ryan attempted to de-escalate the incident and walk away from the group before being confronted, leading to the fight that was captured on social media.

'WA Police have advised the AFL that they intend to take no action against Ryan as a result of the matter and that he was cooperative and assisted the police by attending and providing police statements. 'It should also be noted that Ryan was not drinking on the night and was driving. 'The AFL will take no further action.'. After the incident, the West Coast issued a statement to confirm that Ryan and his partner were safe.

'The West Coast Eagles are aware of an incident involving AFL player Liam Ryan in Fremantle on Wednesday evening,' the Eagles said. The footy star and his partner Evana were part of a group of people leaving the festival. The alleged incident came just before the 28-year-old helped the AFL launch the jersey for next month's Indigenous All Stars match against Fremantle (pictured). Ryan bounced back from an injury-plagued 2023, in which he made only three appearances for the West Coast due to a hamstring problem.

'Liam and his partner Evana are safe, and Liam will continue with pre-season training on Friday morning. 'The Club is working to gather all the information, will [sic] support Liam throughout this process and will make no further comment at this time.'. Ryan had returned to pre-season training after the incident, with the West Coast. The 28-year-old also took part in the launch of the AFL's new Indigenous All Stars jersey several days later and has been named as part of the squad to play for the Indigenous All Stars squad to take on Fremantle on Saturday, February 15.

It is the first time in 10 years that the match has been played with Ryan hopeful that the game can continue to be played for years to come. 'Hopefully, it keeps going from now on. Not every year, but every couple [of years],' Ryan said. 'It would be really good for the communities around Australia. 'I grew up watching blokes like [Adam] Goodes and Lewis Jetta, and it was my dream to play in a game like this. It means a lot.'.
