Besiktas are in talks with former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to become their new head coach. The 51-year-old has been away from management since November 2021 when he was sacked by Man Utd following a poor run of form. Prior to his appointment by United, Solskjaer had two spells in charge of Molde and also had a brief period with Cardiff City.
At Old Trafford, he initially replaced Jose Mourinho on an interim basis in December 2018, before signing a three-year contract in March 2019 after steering the ship. During his time at Man Utd, the Norwegian guided the club to a second-place Premier League finish and an Europa League final but left the club without winning a trophy.
Now, Solskjaer is being lined up by Besiktas, who currently sit in the Turkish Super Lig, to fill the managerial vacancy after parting ways with ex-Rangers, Arsenal and Barcelona man Giovanni van Bronckhorst in November. "Our company has started negotiations with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the position of Football A team technical director," the club said in a statement.
If appointed, a battle between Solskjaer and Mourinho will loom as Besiktas are scheduled to face Fenerbahce away from home at the beginning of May in a fixture that could be crucial for both teams. Besiktas may still be in the hunt for European qualification, whilst Fenerbahce might have closed the gap on league leaders Galatasaray.
