Former Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer closing in on managerial return after three years

Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is closing in on a return to managment with Turkish side Besiktas. Solskjaer has not managed a club since leaving United in November 2021, turning down a number of roles with clubs and national teams since leaving Old Trafford.

The Norwegian, though, is now in talks with the Turkish Super Lig after they parted ways with Dutchman Giovanni van Bronckhorst in November. ‘Our company has started negotiations with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the position of Football A team technical director,’ the club said in a short statement.
Solskjaer was in the running for the Besiktas job in June last year, but the Turkish club then decided to hire former Rangers boss Van Bronckhorst. However, following his dismissal, the former United boss now is set to be given his chance, with reports suggesting that the 51-year-old will sign a one-and-a-half-year deal until the summer of 2026.
Solskjaer is expected to watch Besiktas’ clash against Samsunspor on Saturday from the stands, before taking charge of his first game against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League in midweek. Besiktas have endured a disappointing campaign and currently sit 28th in the Europa League league phase and sixth in the Turkish top flight.
The appointment would mark Solskjaer’s eventual return to the dugout three years after being dismissed by United. The Norwegian originally took over at United to replace Jose Mourinho as caretaker in December 2018. The Norwegian initially found great success at Old Trafford, earning a full-time contract before guiding his former side to third and second-place finishes in his two full seasons at the club.
