Franco Colapinto is not currently speaking with Cadillac about a 2026 race seat, James Vowles has admitted. General Motors is set to form the 11th Formula 1 team through its Cadillac brand, subject to final approval from the sport's bosses. They are to enter in 2026 running with Ferrari engines, in the hope of becoming a fully-fledged works team a couple of years later.

The new entry will take the number of F1 race seats up to 22 which is great news for drivers at a time when there are more capable racers around than there are places on the grid. However, as it stands, Colapinto is not in the frame for one of the new places at the nascent Cadillac squad. "We’ve been discussing [seats] with other teams. For transparency, not with Cadillac," Williams team principal Vowles told The Independent.

"I want to make sure he has a successful career. If we can't offer that, then we'll find a position for him and see what we can offer him in the future.". Colapinto earned a surprise call-up to F1 mid-way through the 2024 season after Williams decided they needed to replace the struggling Logan Sargeant. The Argentine was called up from Formula 2 and made an immediate impact, scoring four points with an eighth-placed finish in just his second F1 appearance.

Another points followed a few weeks later in Austin which saw Colapinto become a top target for teams which still had vacancies, such as Red Bull's second team and Alpine. However, his form then took a dive and three DNFs across the final four Grands Prix proved to be off-putting to his potential suitors.
